Who is the Dreamer? PART 1: A RANDOM DETECTIVE
“It was a dream… we live inside a dream.”
[Phillip Jeffries in “Twin Peaks:Fire walk with me”, by David Lynch and Robert Engels]
No one was overly concerned with finding Chet Desmond or figuring out what might have happened to him. At least, no one in his own universe or layer within the intricate, multilayered structure in which all of this unfolds.
Desmond was officially recorded by the FBI as missing in the line of duty during the investigation into the murder of Teresa Banks. There is no death report; Desmond’s file remains frozen at the exact moment he inspected Mrs. Tremond/Chalfont’s trailer. The precise moment Chet Desmond reaches out and touches the ring in Deer Meadow coincides closely with Phillip Jeffries’ spectral arrival at the FBI offices in Philadelphia. Interdimensional shifts typically require an energetic trade-off or a replacement of presence («one in, one out»). Desmond’s physical disappearance upon interacting with the ritual object serves as the trigger or the electromagnetic anchor that enables Jeffries’ brief physical manifestation in 1989.
Within the framework of the Blue Rose investigations, Desmond falls into the category of agents who have «evaporated»—or been consumed —by the investigation into primordial evil, alongside Phillip Jeffries and, later, Dale Cooper himself. Unlike the others, however, he is never mentioned again. The fact that Chet Desmond did not possess a dark alignment or a corrupt ego —unlike Windom Earle —opens up a possibility for reinterpreting his fate.
Could he not have also managed to escape the Black Lodge during one of the subsequent energy exchanges? Could he, too, have crossed the 430-mile mark (or some other proper mark) somewhere else?
In Northampton, England, perhaps—a place where one needn’t even wait for the nocturnal transformation, when spirits and gods take the reins —a consummate artist like the singer and creative mind behind False Awakenings might seize a unique opportunity to craft something entirely new, simply by crossing paths with… a random detective.
«We are in a series of infinitely nested computer games.»
[A bloke in a cab in “The Show”, by Alan Moore and Mitch Jenkins]
Fletcher Dennis, Gordon Cole, Douglas Bunting, Jack After, Frazer McCoy, Evan Williams, Curt Vile, Daniel Quinn, Frank Moses, Stephen Dedalus…
None of those names were arbitrary.
Carl Rodd, the weary and enigmatic manager of the Fat Trout Trailer Park, knew full well what he was talking about when he said: «I’ve already gone places. I just wanna stay where I am.»
Also—and this is obvious—what Monica Bellucci said to a perplexed Gordon Cole in a Paris café was quite apt and pertinent. Therein may lie the key to all of this:
«We are like the dreamer who dreams and then lives inside the dream. But who is the dreamer?«
Let’s rock!
«It’s got to be jazz! / That’s what she wants
You are so vile / Mr. Pink Eyes.»
[The Cure´s “Mr. Pink Eyes”]
